[durational performance]

As We Humans Do is an experimental performance set within the multidimensional museum installation of HETEROGLOSSIA, presented at the exhibition’s closing. It builds upon and extends the original performance Misconceptions of the Lyrical Cube, conceived by Dutch artist Tiong Ang and performed by Dutch-based and Chinese artists in November 2018.

Olga Merekina’s interpretation began with her personal experience of the original performance and its rehearsal process, which she used to uncover hidden layers of interpersonal connection, heightened by the complexity of the performers’ prior experiences. Rather than engaging with the ongoing dynamics between each other and the audience, the performers instead relived and revisited real past events, substituting the original participants with the present ones.

The performance’s limited communication means prevented the participants from articulating their thoughts, encouraging them to convey their messages through physical and sensory expression. The inevitable misunderstandings resulting from this non-verbal interaction became a central feature of the performance, highlighting the fragility and complexity of human relationships.
